  1. Kevin's Question: How to Find Your Passion?

  2. 00:00Hello, Mr. Andrew Heberman. My name is
  3. 00:02Kevin and my question is, how does one
  4. 00:05find what they are truly passionate
  5. 00:07about? Because anyone that follows you
  6. 00:11and what you do can safely assume that
  7. 00:13you're passionate about health, science,
  8. 00:16and teaching the community about those
  9. 00:18things.
  10. 00:20And as someone who just graduated from
  11. 00:23college and is finding themsself in the
  12. 00:26world, and I'm sure I can speak for
  13. 00:28millions of other people, I was
  14. 00:31wondering if there was any sciencebacked
  15. 00:33evidence of being able to find what
  16. 00:36someone is really truly passionate
  17. 00:37about. Kevin, thank [clears throat] you
  18. 00:40so much for your question. This is a
  19. 00:43vital question in our lives, regardless
  20. 00:46of age. Oh, and congratulations on
  21. 00:48graduating college. That's no small
  22. 00:50feat. I know people have mixed feelings
  23. 00:52nowadays about the value of degrees,
  24. 00:54etc. I, you know, and here I'm heavily
  25. 00:56biased. I'm a university professor. Um,
  26. 00:59and I'm, you know, super enthusiastic
  27. 01:02about learning and teaching and all the
  28. 01:03rest. But I I still think for many, not
  29. 01:06all, it it's a wonderful choice and and
  30. 01:08it's no small thing to finish uh a
  31. 01:10degree. So, congratulations to you and
  32. 01:12to your family. Finding your passion,
  33. 01:15that's a big question. It's actually one
  34. 01:17that I touch on in the final chapter of
  35. 01:20my book among other things in that
  36. 01:21chapter. And that's not a plug for the
  37. 01:23book. Um, it's just simply to say that I
  38. 01:25go into this in in some detail beyond
  39. 01:28what I'm going to offer here just for
  40. 01:29sake of time. I'll do my best to give
  41. Maintain Daily Structure

  42. 01:32you and anyone else listening to this
  43. 01:34what I think are the key things
  44. 01:37regardless of age.
  45. 01:40First of all,
  46. 01:42if you don't know what your passion is,
  47. 01:45and even if you think you might, even if
  48. 01:48you are absolutely sure you do, it is
  49. 01:51absolutely critical that if you want to
  50. 01:53be successful, that you continue to be
  51. 01:56structured about your daily life. Now, I
  52. 01:58don't mean overoptimization,
  53. 02:01doing every single health protocol.
  54. 02:02That's not what I'm talking about. What
  55. 02:04I'm talking about is you need to have a
  56. 02:07purpose each day and waking up even if
  57. 02:09it's not the thing. It doesn't feel like
  58. 02:11the thing. So I think it's very
  59. 02:12important if you're a student to focus
  60. 02:14on your studies. If you're able to do
  61. 02:16that and not work, more power to you.
  62. 02:18Many people have to do that and work. If
  63. 02:20you're working a job, no matter how far
  64. 02:23from where you would like to be
  65. 02:25eventually internally, you know, if it's
  66. 02:28the completely wrong career for you,
  67. 02:30until you start to feel something
  68. 02:33pulling you or even just tilting you in
  69. 02:35a slightly different direction, it is
  70. 02:37vitally important to continue to take
  71. 02:40care of yourself to try and get the
  72. 02:41sleep that you can, to get your morning
  73. 02:43sunlight, to get some exercise. Do those
  74. 02:45things. Doesn't matter if you're a store
  75. 02:47clerk, you're selling shoes. I mean,
  76. 02:49long before I became a scientist, I
  77. 02:51mean, I worked in skateboard shops. I
  78. 02:53sold shoes. I assembled um uh radio
  79. 02:57flyer wagons and toys at a toy store. Um
  80. 03:01I mean, I worked in a bakery. I had a
  81. 03:04paper route. I mowed lawns. I did all
  82. 03:06those things. Um I can't say that I
  83. 03:08loved all those jobs. Some of them I
  84. 03:09liked more than others. Some of them
  85. 03:11paid barely anything. Some of them paid
  86. 03:13a little better. But it's just so
  87. 03:15important to con to stay busy and to
  88. 03:17continue to work and work on yourself.
  89. No Input, No Output

  90. 03:20And this isn't just theory, right?
  91. 03:21You're you're cultivating the skills
  92. 03:23that in some way you're going to apply
  93. 03:26to your passion once you find it. Now,
  94. 03:28how do you find the passion? The way you
  95. 03:29find the passion can be best summarized.
  96. 03:32Not to sound uh mystical here, it sounds
  97. 03:35a little bit like a riddle, but you know
  98. 03:36the great Joe Strummer from the Clash
  99. 03:39who in my opinion started the better
  100. 03:41band, the Mescaleros later, which wasn't
  101. 03:44punk rock, it's not I don't even know if
  102. 03:46it's rock and roll, it's just music.
  103. 03:47Amazing. He created three masterpieces
  104. 03:49later in his life. You know, he had this
  105. 03:52saying which was it was literally called
  106. 03:54Strummer's law, which is no input, no
  107. 03:56output. You need to be interfacing with
  108. 03:59the world in order to have ideas and to
  109. 04:02discover what your passion is. You know,
  110. 04:03the other day, um, because I had a bunch
  111. 04:05of just kind of wrote things to do, I
  112. 04:07had to handle a bunch of stuff that
  113. 04:08could be done kind of mindlessly, but it
  114. 04:10had to be done. I was listening to a
  115. 04:13lecture on modern art history. I just
  116. 04:16decided to put that in modern art
  117. 04:18history documentary into YouTube. Just
  118. 04:20saw what came up and I discovered two
  119. 04:22artists that just completely blew my
  120. 04:25mind. And I love art. I love modern art.
  121. 04:27I hadn't really gone down this rabbit
  122. 04:30hole of these two particular artists and
  123. 04:32it doesn't really matter who they are or
  124. 04:33what they did but in that listening I
  125. 04:36had a couple of ideas about things
  126. 04:38related to the visual system that I
  127. 04:41worked on years ago and some interest
  128. 04:43that I have in eye health as it relates
  129. 04:46to some of this emerging peptide science
  130. 04:49field. Okay, that's the way the brain
  131. 04:51works. It's taking different nodes of
  132. 04:55interest and combining them and that's
  133. 04:57what your original contribution to the
  134. 04:59world whatever it happens to be in
  135. 05:00whether it's in exercise science or
  136. 05:02finance or you're a high school teacher
  137. 05:05those things are going to converge in
  138. 05:06the unique version that is you. Now the
  139. 05:10only way that you can find your passion
  140. 05:12is to keep an active interest in the
  141. 05:15world. That also means not getting
  142. 05:18pulled into other people's rabbit holes.
  143. 05:19You need to avoid two things critically.
  144. Avoid Drama & Numbing Out

  145. 05:21These are the don'ts. Avoid drama,
  146. 05:24especially getting pulled into it, and
  147. 05:26avoid numbing out. Anything that
  148. 05:28activates you, gets you angry. Okay,
  149. 05:31that might be something that could turn
  150. 05:32into a sense of justice and advocacy.
  151. 05:35Great. If that's your path, okay, maybe
  152. 05:38you go into public policy or something
  153. 05:39of that sort or into advocacy for
  154. 05:42animals or the world or certain group of
  155. 05:45people. Great. But [snorts] you have to
  156. 05:47be very careful that you're not getting
  157. 05:48pulled into meaningless dramas that
  158. 05:50you're not also numbing out because a
  159. 05:53lot of what's out there in the world is
  160. 05:54designed to do one or two of those
  161. 05:55things. So stay structured in your life.
  162. 05:58Do some job work. This is critical. I
  163. 06:02also think at a certain age for some
  164. 06:05people earlier than others because they
  165. 06:07have to earning your own money just
  166. 06:09feels good even if it's not a lot. just
  167. 06:11earning your own money, putting in
  168. 06:12savings, maybe spending some of it,
  169. 06:14putting into investment account, that
  170. 06:15kind of thing feels really good. You're
  171. 06:17building something.
  172. 06:20That algorithm, that underlying
  173. 06:22operation of doing something, showing
  174. 06:24up, trying to be good at it, maybe even
  175. 06:26great at it, even though it's not your
  176. 06:28calling, sets the stage. It prepares you
  177. 06:30for when you get kind of pulled towards
  178. 06:32something. Oh, I'm really interested
  179. 06:34also in this aspect of fitness or this
  180. 06:36aspect of film making. And eventually
  181. 06:39you'll pick your trajectory. And the key
  182. 06:41thing is to remember that's not your
  183. 06:43final trajectory. You're heading off on
  184. 06:45a vector that will take you someplace
  185. 06:47that will take you someplace else,
  186. 06:49someplace else. You may have one career,
  187. 06:50you may have several in your lifetime,
  188. 06:53but no input, no output. Remain curious
  189. 06:55and become good and ideally great at
  190. 06:59listening to your own inner compass or I
  191. 07:02like to think about it antenna.
  192. 07:04Occasionally I see something I'm just
  193. 07:05like, "Wow, this is I don't know why
  194. 07:07it's interesting and I don't care."
  195. 07:09You're inspired by it. Some element of
  196. 07:11it gets into your consciousness and you
  197. 07:13move forward with that. I actually have
  198. 07:14a notebook. This is something I've done
  199. 07:16um since my teens. Early in my academic
  200. 07:19career, I had a a list. I update that
  201. Track What Inspires You

  202. 07:22list and I have names of different
  203. 07:25people. Some were from the world of
  204. 07:28science, some from health and fitness,
  205. 07:31some from art, some from music. I'm not
  206. 07:33a musician. I have zero minus and
  207. 07:35infinity musical talent, but I love
  208. 07:37music as a consumer. I just really enjoy
  209. 07:39being a consumer of it. These are people
  210. 07:40whose kind of careers or what they did
  211. 07:44really impressed me. They resonated with
  212. 07:45me. That's that's the thing because I
  213. 07:48mean a lot of people impressed me, but
  214. 07:49it resonated with me. And over the
  215. 07:51years, I would cross some out and add
  216. 07:52some in. And in many ways, the career
  217. 07:55arc that I've taken, the passion arc or
  218. 07:57passions plural arc that I've taken is a
  219. 08:00reflection of all of that, plus my own
  220. 08:02unique experience.
  221. 08:04By the way, this was long before podcast
  222. 08:05or even heard about personal development
  223. 08:07or any of that.
  224. 08:09Get in touch with what moves you, what
  225. 08:12wakes you up, what kind of gives you a
  226. 08:13charge in your body that's not
  227. 08:15meaningless drama. And also avoid
  228. 08:17numbing out. And here's the other piece.
  229. 08:20If you're going to go down a particular
  230. 08:22path, this is so critical. If you're
  231. 08:25going to go down a certain path, don't
  232. 08:27try and bring your unique spin into it
  233. 08:30too early. Every career path, whether
  234. Chop Wood, Carry Water

  235. 08:32it's biological sciences or psychology
  236. 08:34or exercise physiology or finance,
  237. 08:37there's a chop wood carry water phase of
  238. 08:39that where you have to develop the
  239. 08:41competency
  240. 08:43and go from unskilled to skilled and
  241. 08:45hopefully from skilled to mastery in
  242. 08:47that thing. And first of all, no one
  243. 08:49wants to work with the person that's
  244. 08:51trying to bring their own unique spin to
  245. 08:52the thing that they barely understand
  246. 08:55too early. Okay? You have to get your
  247. 08:57chops in something. So, you have to
  248. 09:00apprentice yourself to something. And
  249. 09:02that can be very difficult for people
  250. 09:03who have a sense of self that they're a
  251. 09:06little different. They don't want to do
  252. 09:07things the way everyone else does. They
  253. 09:08need to see themselves, their unique
  254. 09:10gift in the thing. And I'll tell you
  255. 09:12what, you will be able to do that and
  256. 09:14you can transform an entire field. You
  257. 09:15will literally change the game of what
  258. 09:18you do. But you got to get the core
  259. 09:21mechanics and the basics first. You
  260. 09:23don't get to come in there and be like,
  261. 09:24I'm me and I'm going to change the game.
  262. 09:26No, it's chop wood, carry water. So
  263. 09:28that's like, you know, [snorts]
  264. 09:31dribble, shoot, guard, pass, like you
  265. 09:33know, basketball, whatever. Whatever
  266. 09:35your
  267. 09:37at that time vocation turns out to be,
  268. 09:39you have to work through the core
  269. 09:41mechanics of that. You have to see the
  270. 09:42things you're proficient at, the things
  271. 09:44that come naturally. And then of course
  272. 09:45there going to be things that are much
  273. 09:46harder for you and you're going to have
  274. 09:47to overcome those to be in that field.
  275. 09:50And this can be a tough pill for a lot
  276. 09:52of people to swallow. But if you can
  277. 09:54accept that you're going to apprentice
  278. 09:56yourself to this thing for a short while
  279. 09:57knowing that it's not or a long while
  280. 09:59knowing that it's not your final
  281. 10:01destination and that you'll eventually
  282. 10:03be able to bring in some probably not
  283. 10:05all but some of your unique gifts to
  284. 10:07that craft. And that's where your unique
  285. 10:11contribution is going to come through.
  286. 10:13So, what I'm describing here are a
  287. 10:15number of different tributaries that all
  288. 10:16start with you that eventually converge
  289. 10:18in your unique gift to your passion. But
  290. 10:21in the meantime, stay structured. Take
  291. 10:24care of yourself. Avoid meaningless
  292. 10:26drama. Don't numb out. Try different
  293. 10:29things. Develop a sense of taste. What
  294. 10:32moves you toward or away from things?
  295. 10:34Learn yum yuck me. Like if you see
  296. 10:36something or like something in a given
  297. 10:38area of whatever any vocation like yes,
  298. 10:41I love that or no, I definitely don't
  299. 10:43like that or meh. There can be some mess
  300. 10:45and some yums, but the uh no, that's not
  301. 10:48going to work. But with that said, once
  302. 10:50you take on something, you decide to do
  303. 10:52it. There going to be some things that
  304. 10:54are hard. Don't confuse that for yuck.
  305. 10:56It just means you haven't developed the
  306. 10:57skill set yet. And you're going to have
  307. 10:59to embrace and tackle certain things
  308. 11:01that are hard for you. You have to chop
  309. Mastery & Unique Contribution

  310. 11:03wood, carry water for a while. But once
  311. 11:05you go from unskilled to skilled and
  312. 11:07you're starting to transition from
  313. 11:08skilled to mastery and certainly once
  314. 11:10you've developed mastery in an area then
  315. 11:12you can bring together or include some
  316. 11:14of your unique experience and do
  317. 11:16something truly unique, truly exciting
  318. 11:18and transform your field likely
  319. 11:19transform the world because in some
  320. 11:21small or large way you're going to
  321. 11:22transform the world. So that's the
  322. 11:25recipe for finding your passion. It's
  323. 11:27really about being you, but plugging
  324. 11:29yourself into some sort of system long
  325. 11:31enough to get really good at something
  326. 11:33so that then you can put your stamp on
  327. 11:35it. Worked for me.
  328. 11:38[music]
