- 00:00for people just starting their career I
- 00:01have a bit of a different advice I think
- 00:02a lot of people say go start your own
- 00:03company learn by doing I highly don't
- 00:05recommend that route I would recommend
- 00:07most people they actually go see what
- 00:09good looks like and that doesn't
- 00:10necessarily part where I talk about
- 00:11Prestige is that like just because
- 00:13something prestigious doesn't mean the
- 00:14right place that you're going to learn
- 00:15the most from the thing that might have
- 00:16made that procedure might no longer
- 00:18still be relevant because of people who
- 00:20were there that got it that state might
- 00:21not be as involved it might be a much
- 00:22larger company might be a lot more
- 00:24process it's very much about I would say
- 00:26go look for the smartest people you can
- 00:28surround yourself with and try to work
- 00:29there and just do like little flavor one
- 00:31year at a multiple companies like you
- 00:33really want to understand something from
- 00:34first principles which really requires
- 00:35spending multiple years trying to work
- 00:37through some hard problem you definitely
- 00:39want to try to look for places have
- 00:40already had some level of success and
- 00:42you're going to continue to build on
- 00:43level of success the reason I call that
- 00:45out is because there's some pretty
- 00:46interesting companies with smart people
- 00:47that seem smart from the outside as a
- 00:4922y old or when you're young it's hard
- 00:51to evaluate like what is smart or not
- 00:53smart because everyone smarter than you

- 01:03how we built machines back at SpaceX
- 01:05where I spent the prior 4 and a half
- 01:07years before working on the dragon
- 01:08flight software program and dragon was a
- 01:10capsule that carried astronauts and
- 01:12cargo to the space station so we have uh
- 01:13seven publicly announced customers we
- 01:15raised about 25 million most recently
- 01:17the series a was led by GV Plus Google
- 01:20Ventures previous rced was led by two
- 01:22firms in LA CA Ventures focuses on a lot
- 01:24of Enterprise SAS Riot Venture is one of
- 01:27the best like Hardware investing firms
From JPL To SpaceX
- 01:33I was born and raised in a little suburb
- 01:35outside of LA right next to JPL so I was
- 01:38about 10 15 minutes outside of JPL so I
- 01:40actually grew up going to Industry days
- 01:42where you can just walk in there's a lot
- 01:43of photos of me actually with like
- 01:45playing with the Mars rover and the
- 01:46Legos and stuff that they had at JPL I
- 01:48would always grew up with Legos but then
- 01:49like my first real like machines were
- 01:51LEGO Mindstorms you can build all robots
- 01:53and you can make very simple programs
- 01:55with these Legos I started that around 9
- 01:56so I was like fourth grade always had
- 01:58fun with that with my friends and I also
- 02:00this thing called first Lego league so
- 02:01first robotics they have these
- 02:02competitions it's most known for the
- 02:04high schoolers that are building like
- 02:05these robots they'll have like they'll
- 02:07be like three on three and they'll have
- 02:08some sort of like theme saying like Hey
- 02:10we're building a moon base so you have
- 02:11to build a robot that can go drive
- 02:12around on a slick floor the floor will
- 02:14be all whiteboard material and the
- 02:16wheels you have to use are basically
- 02:17like a whiteboard material so it's like
- 02:18super slippery and we all have some sort
- 02:20of competition we to like move these
- 02:22massive balls into a net whatever it is
- 02:24but they also have younger levels it's
- 02:26Lego based so that was kind of my
- 02:27background I was like around engineering
- 02:29but it wasn't like a hardcore
- 02:30engineering like stem background it's
- 02:32like I had the exposure but I had a lot
- 02:34of freedom to do other things there's a
- 02:36little bit more Nuance I knew that the
- 02:37whole like PayPal Mafia so basically
- 02:39during undergrad that's when Peter teal
- 02:41came out with 0 to1 so that book 0 to1 I
- 02:44liked it a lot kind of more contrarian
- 02:46very much promoting first principles
- 02:47thinking of that I was looking at more
- 02:49of like the PayPal Mafia companies but
- 02:51PayPal was also like much later stage I
- 02:53I didn't think it was the PayPal in the
- 02:54early days but a lot of these other
- 02:56companies like paler SpaceX Tesla were
- 02:58really interesting so that's what I was
- 03:00looking at as opposed to like the
- 03:01prestigious companies I actually would
- 03:03as part of advice I would highly
- 03:04recommend people not optimizing for
- 03:05Prestige do you know the atmology of the
- 03:07word Prestige the atmology of the word
- 03:09Prestige is actually it goes back to
- 03:10like the French word for illusion and
- 03:12then it goes back to the Latin word for
- 03:13playing tricks Conjuring tricks the
- 03:15whole concept like Prestige and a
- 03:16prestigious Place actually a bit of an
- 03:18illusion you just want to go to places
- 03:19that are like have results like can like
- 03:21see people say it's great but you can
- 03:22actually see with your own eyes on the
- 03:24ground truth with space xile was clearly
- 03:26visible

What I learned from SpaceX
- 04:24now I joined space act there is a lot of
- 04:27stuff to learn one of the Dragon
- 04:28missions as is coming back to Earth the
- 04:31Dragon capsule has four parachutes one
- 04:32of the four parachutes it didn't open
- 04:34until a pretty low altitude of course
- 04:36there's redundancy built in it was
- 04:37always going to be safe even though that
- 04:38parachute didn't open it wasn't an
- 04:40expected Behavior and the way that this
- 04:41works is these Dragon missions work on a
- 04:43scheduling is as soon as you bring these
- 04:45four astronauts back you want to launch
- 04:46another four immediately to get back on
- 04:48a space station our scheduled next
- 04:49launch was actually just one week behind
- 04:51but then NASA said hey this parachute
- 04:52didn't open how do we know this is not
- 04:54going to be a more problematic issue on
- 04:56the next mission and then they grounded
- 04:57the next flight until this result for us
- 04:59to actually figure out what was
- 05:00happening we need to see all the data
- 05:01that was collected from the vehicle but
- 05:03it's stored on this like black box on
- 05:05the vehicle just like I was an airplane
- 05:06has like this black box that stores all
- 05:07the data and the thing is that this
- 05:09capsule it lands in the Gulf of Mexico
- 05:10you don't have internet connection in
- 05:12the Gulf of Mexico to go debug this so
- 05:13at that time starlink was like a very
- 05:15experimental program so we like shot
- 05:17over and email the Starling team and
- 05:18we're like hey is there any way we can
- 05:20get internet over the Gulf of Mexico
- 05:22they activated some cells over the Gulf
- 05:24of Mexico upload this data from the
- 05:26Dragon capsule while it was sailing this
- 05:27is before like Starling was a thing so
- 05:29like getting High through put internet
- 05:30in middle of the ocean is not heard of
- 05:32we're able to send all the data back to
- 05:33the headquarters we able to run it
- 05:35through the whole testing Suite do all
- 05:36the analysis basically say that the next
- 05:38mission is good to go it's very
- 05:39interesting you have very smart people
- 05:40that are basically able to coordinate
- 05:42satellites to beam internet when it was
- 05:44a very experimental program to go
- 05:46accelerate your physical spacecraft
- 05:47company at the time so I think that was
- 05:49just like a very cool experience I think
- 05:50the biggest things I learned was just
- 05:52seeing what good looks like which I know
- 05:53is like very broad because I I actually
- 05:55noce you were asking the question
- 05:56earlier about what advice would you give
- 05:58and I think one of the things is just
- 06:00learning from the smartest folks and at
- 06:01SpaceX I just saw a lot of people that
- 06:03were operating a very high level and
- 06:04sure you can criticize that like maybe
- 06:06certain things like management might not
- 06:07be what everyone else likes but at the
- 06:09end of the day you see it with your eyes
- 06:10it's like the largest rocket ever
- 06:11launched and brought back in landing
- 06:13until you you can like push the boundary
- 06:14and like show people things that have
- 06:16never been possible and you're like
- 06:17super proud of the work you do you work
- 06:20really really hard but then you can look
- 06:21back and you're super proud of what you
- 06:23do I think the key learning was just how
- 06:24to operate at that very high level the
- 06:26things that stood out of operating that
- 06:28high level La is just urgency so it's
- 06:30just like high urgency High iteration
- 06:31rate you learn the most if you just have
- 06:33that urgency to move faster it was
- 06:35mostly I just wanted to see what good
- 06:36look like so I was interview on
- 06:37companies I thought were really high
- 06:39performing at that time this is what
- 06:402017 is when I decided to join SpaceX I
- 06:43was just pretty much looking for
- 06:45learning from very very high performing
- 06:46companies because I knew eventually I'd
- 06:48either be running a company or starting
- 06:50company or be in a high leadership
- 06:52position let me go see how it was done
- 06:53by the best so I was interviewing
- 06:55companies I thought were very very high
- 06:56performing at that time stripe was one
- 06:57of the hot companies at that time was
- 06:59like really interesting at the time I
- 07:01just wanted to learn from people who
- 07:02were doing well what stood about SpaceX
- 07:04like the interview process was just very
- 07:05different than every other company
- 07:07nobody was pitching me on benefits no
- 07:08one was pitching me on like work life
- 07:10balance they were pitching me on Mission
- 07:11and the work that you're doing here
- 07:13there's a lot more Spartan but it's also
- 07:14something you can look back on and be
- 07:16very excited about and you can like
- 07:18point to something great that you
- 07:19accomplished with another team that was
- 07:21grinding very hard that was the main
- 07:22reason why I chose it so while I was
- 07:24there I learned a lot about how to build
- 07:26machines that are safer more reliable
- 07:27fall tolerant I wanted to bring a lot of
- 07:29those ideas and practices The Wider
- 07:31industry of people building machines
- 07:33that's why we actually started sift to
- 07:35productize some of this knowledge into
- 07:36tools for the rest of the hardware
- 07:38industry I see Sith growing in like the
- 07:40vision that I would have for it or my
- 07:41goal I want a percentage of the physical
- 07:43world to be operating on Sith I want at
- 07:45least a percent of the trains the planes
- 07:47the automobiles the drones the aircraft
- 07:49things that are out there I want those
- 07:51operating on sift whether they're being
- 07:53designed whether they're being
- 07:54manufactured if they're out in the field
- 07:55they're generating data they need to be
- 07:57maintained there should be at least
- 07:58percentage of the physical world running
Why A Customer-Centric Company
- 08:00on
- 08:04CFT process for acquiring cft's first
- 08:06customer was actually kind of Novel we
- 08:08actually just rented space parallel
- 08:10systems's office they're the autonomous
- 08:11rail company they were our first
- 08:13customer they have a pretty cool office
- 08:14and we literally just asked them if we
- 08:16can rent one of the rooms as we build
- 08:17out the product and that was just
- 08:18motivated by at SpaceX Elon always
- 08:20wanted the engineer on the factory floor
- 08:22so we said we should just be embedded
- 08:23with our customers let's go rent a room
- 08:25and then as we built the product we had
- 08:26new features we just go grab someone
- 08:28else in the office and say what do you
- 08:29think of this what do you want what do
- 08:30you not like our early road map was
- 08:32completely driven by them the evolution
- 08:33of our sales motion to the next first
- 08:36few customers it was a lot of it was
- 08:37like using things in network we were
- 08:39lucky that there's vibrant SpaceX Alum
- 08:41Community we also were able to reach out
- 08:42through existing investors our investors
- 08:44that were generally interested in Sith
- 08:45uh for introductions and also just even
- 08:47just reaching out on LinkedIn talking
- 08:49about this stuff that we so what we
- 08:50wanted to do showing the product but
- 08:52then also we had a competitor started
- 08:53around the same time as us we actually
- 08:55had a few of those bake offs in the
- 08:56early days the other companies knew that
- 08:58there's final customers do with their
- 08:59multiple companies in the space invited
- 09:00us to a bake off because it definitely
- 09:02added a lot of urgency on our team and
- 09:03we won all the bake offs that we've done
- 09:05to date that was actually a bit of a
- 09:06novel experience I would say compared to
- 09:08most companies I think some of the
- 09:09biggest lessons I've learned is that
- 09:11like it really all just comes down to
- 09:12people you have one life to live like
- 09:13spend it with the people you want to be
- 09:14around there's a lot of urgency I have
- 09:16very very limited time if I'm going to
- 09:18go spend my time with someone I want to
- 09:19be the best person I can spend that time
- 09:21with and that goes into everything
- 09:23whether that's work whether that's
- 09:24personal so choosing the best partner or
- 09:26that everything that you do is just
- 09:28inform other people that are into that
- 09:29the end of the day like CFT you can talk
- 09:30about all this Tech you can talk talk
- 09:31about this architecture you can talk
- 09:33about all this cool stuff that we do
- 09:34even our backgrounds or whatever but it
- 09:36really just comes down to people without
- 09:37the people we have at sift we wouldn't
- 09:39have the company to sift make sure you
- 09:41bring together the best team create
- 09:42opportunities for everyone to grow keep
- 09:44everyone happy to be there that's the
- 09:46main lesson I
The Hidden Truth About Careers
- 09:50learned and that's actually a big thing
- 09:51I would call out because a lot of the
- 09:52audience here probably it looks cool to
- 09:54get some person that's like oh the CEO
- 09:56or that person who it's like a really
- 09:58high profile sounds really you just get
- 09:59them as advisors but if they're not
- 10:01invested in your success significantly
- 10:02they're not going to be actually helping
- 10:04you they're not going to be doing
- 10:05interviews they're not going to help you
- 10:06on the trenches and you need to get
- 10:07people who are going to do that and in
- 10:09that process they're going to challenge
- 10:10you and get the smartest folks around so
- 10:12the best way to evaluate what is a good
- 10:13team or smart team honestly is just a
- 10:15kiss a lot of frogs maintaining that
- 10:16Talent bar and looking for people who
- 10:18want to do something challenging that
- 10:19they can be proud of they're going to
- 10:21work hard and they can think around like
- 10:22the same level or smarter than you even
- 10:24better for people just starting the
- 10:25career I have a bit of a different
- 10:27advice I think a lot of people say go
- 10:28start your own company learn by doing I
- 10:30highly don't recommend that route I
- 10:31would recommend most people they
- 10:32actually go see what good looks like and
- 10:34that doesn't necessarily part where I
- 10:36talk about Prestige is that like just
- 10:37because something's procedes doesn't
- 10:39mean that it's like the right place that
- 10:40you're going to learn the most from the
- 10:41thing that might have made that
- 10:42procedure might no longer still be
- 10:44relevant because the people who were
- 10:45there that got it to that state might
- 10:47not be as involved it might be a much
- 10:48larger company might be a lot more
- 10:49process it's very much about I would say
- 10:52go look for the smartest people you can
- 10:53surround yourself with and try to work
- 10:55there and don't just do like little
- 10:56flavor one year at multiple companies
- 10:58like you really want understand
- 10:59something from first principles which
- 11:01really requires spending multiple years
- 11:02TR to work through some hard problems
- 11:04you definitely want to try to look for
- 11:05places have already had some level of
- 11:07success and you're going to continue to
- 11:09build on a level of success the reason I
- 11:10call that out is because there's some
- 11:12pretty interesting companies but smart
- 11:13people that seem smart from the outside
- 11:14and as a 22y old or when you're young
- 11:16it's hard to evaluate like what is smart
- 11:18or not smart because everyone's smarter
- 11:20than you you want to be careful to not
- 11:22go somewhere spend a decade and if that
- 11:24company shuts down you don't know what
- 11:25that company did that was successful or
- 11:27not successful that's why it's good to
- 11:29go to place has like some level of
- 11:30success that has momentum and it's
- 11:31continuing to grow so like SpaceX was
- 11:33really awesome in that regard they were
- 11:35actually around the time I landed was
- 11:36the first time the Falcon heavy was
- 11:37launched they already had rocket Falcon
- 11:399 rockets that were launching they
- 11:40already had the Dragon 1 program but
- 11:42there's still a lot more they were
- 11:43planning on doing they weren't just like
- 11:44sitting and resting that's what I would
- 11:46optimize for the reason I call out the
- 11:48prestige is like I would completely
- 11:49remove the prestige like if you really
- 11:50want to do that go do that the reason I
- 11:51call that out is because a lot of times
- 11:53people will go into that career purely
- 11:54for the sake of that saying like it
- 11:55looks cool you can go tell your aunts
- 11:57about it but are you going to learn as
- 11:59much are you doing like hard skills are
- 12:00you actually working on the problem are
- 12:02you completely abstracted away are you
- 12:04just multiplying the Grump work that's
- 12:05being done so like are you actually
- 12:07going to ownership of things or are you
- 12:08just like being the grunt work
- 12:09multiplier for someone else that's more
- 12:11senior so the reason I recommend people
- 12:13to join a company doing something hard
- 12:15and like seeing what great looks like
- 12:16it's very difficult to strive for
- 12:17greatness if you've never seen what
- 12:18greatness looks like cool you can go
- 12:20watch as many podcasts as you want you
- 12:21can go see what some blog posts but it's
- 12:23kind of like Instagram right you only
- 12:24see the best of someone's life you only
- 12:26see like a very curated version that's
- 12:28in like a blog post but what were the
- 12:29decisions that got the company to that
- 12:31place what were the nine failures they
- 12:33had for that one success that's what you
- 12:35learn by actually solving hard problems
- 12:37and you don't get that by spending one
- 12:38two years at like six companies and then
- 12:40saying I'm going to do an MBA and then
- 12:42go start company for example and you
- 12:43just really have to work deeply on a
- 12:45hard problem with smart folk and a hard
- 12:46Problem by the way can be different
- 12:48problems like you don't necessarily have
- 12:49to go build Rockets even just like
- 12:50growing like a software startup there's
- 12:52a lot of challenges in building that
- 12:53company honestly like I don't think it's
- 12:55a complete reflection on the other
- 12:56person not being smart I think just
- 12:58what's the right role for the person
- 12:59like for somebody join your company it's
- 13:01like it's a pretty big risk it might be
- 13:02very different than somewhere else that
- 13:03they've been very successful at someone
- 13:05who might have been very very successful
- 13:06like a sales force they might struggle
- 13:08in a much earlier stage role like I
- 13:09wouldn't hold it against them it's just
- 13:11a process like don't feel as bad about
- 13:12it everyone does it everyone struggles
- 13:14everyone finds it hard but as you're
- 13:16talking about iteration rate you want to
- 13:17kiss more frogs you'll see what's good
- 13:19what's not a lot faster than sitting
- 13:21there trying to grind through a bad
The First Principle Thinking
- 13:25decision the best things I learned while
- 13:28working at SpaceX very very strong focus
- 13:30on first principles thinking you can
- 13:32just keep asking why a lot of times
- 13:34people push something off and they say
- 13:35oh well we're waiting for this person
- 13:37before we have that meeting is something
- 13:39scheduled for 2 weeks from now it's like
- 13:40why does that person even have to be in
- 13:41the meeting what can we go around and
- 13:42still move let's say something's not
- 13:44working instead of just saying like oh
- 13:46that's not working because it's just
- 13:47broken or it's like a thing that you
- 13:48can't do like people say you can't land
- 13:49Rockets like why why can't you land
- 13:51rocket we fly and land planes all the
- 13:53time people like oh because of this or
- 13:55this technical reason and it's like well
- 13:56not actually blocked by physics it's
- 13:57just that nobody's ever done it before
- 13:59basically you keep asking why till the
- 14:01point physics is the reason you can't do
- 14:03it I think that's what I would consider
- 14:04first principles but it applies
- 14:06everywhere it's like I think a lot of
- 14:07times we have a tendency to just say oh
- 14:09the hardware team says we can't do this
- 14:10it's like well who on the hardware team
- 14:12and you go talk to that person you
- 14:13realize they actually can do it but it's
- 14:14just like some other thing that they
- 14:15also need and if you as long as you get
- 14:17that then you can actually get this
- 14:18thing a lot faster there's actually this
- 14:20plays into a lot of like Risk as well
- 14:22Warner Von Bron who used to run NASA
- 14:24back in the during the Apollo era he
- 14:26noticed that let's say some engineer
- 14:27identified a risk and then they told
- 14:29manager about it the manager would
- 14:30downplay that risk it would go from
- 14:31saying oh this is fatal when you stop
- 14:33the mission to the manager saying hey
- 14:34this is a really high risk that person's
- 14:36manager says oh we need to go look into
- 14:38this by the time it reaches Warner Von
- 14:39Brun he would actually just basically
- 14:41someone would says oh everything's good
- 14:43to go he actually implemented this thing
- 14:44called like weekly notes so what he
- 14:46would do is he had every individual
- 14:47engineering squad or team write notes
- 14:49and his team would compile them into a
- 14:51book and he would actually review all
- 14:52them so he basically sees ground truth
- 14:54and he can actually make decisions from
- 14:55first principles about what's holding of
- 14:57the program and basically that's how we
- 14:59put a person on the moon those Rockets
- 15:01probably have the compute power of like
- 15:02a ti84 calculator you can do some pretty
- 15:04cool things when you actually dig into
- 15:10[Applause]
