Sleep & Immune Function
- 00:00Why is it at a mechanistic level that if
- 00:02you miss a night or two of sleep that
- 00:05your immune system seems so less
- 00:07effective in fighting off off
- 00:08infections? Do we know what's happening?
- 00:10Is it like you've got so much adenosine
- 00:12which is the sleepy molecule and and uh
- 00:14like that that adenosine inhibits te-
- 00:17cell function or something? Do we
- 00:18actually know? Because I think all of us
- 00:20are familiar with the fact that if we we
- 00:21don't sleep well or enough for a couple
- 00:23of nights, we're much more susceptible
- 00:25to getting sick. Yeah.
- 00:26Is there a mechanistic understanding of
- 00:28why that's so? I think there are bits
- 00:30and pieces of it. I think um some some
- 00:33really nice work shows that at night a
- 00:35few wacky thing when you're sleep a few
- 00:38what you might have thought would be
- 00:39wacky things happen and and one of them
- 00:40is that a lot of your immune cells clear
- 00:43back to the bone marrow
- 00:45um and and your tissues become populated
- 00:47with a bunch of neutrfils that come out
- 00:50of the bone marrow and and seem to be
- 00:52you know depositing collagen around your
- 00:54body and and so there's a lot of things
- 00:56that I think are reparative about sleep.
Why We Need Sleep
- 00:58I've thought about this a lot in my own
- 01:00life as probably you have with sleep is
- 01:01to one of the questions of course is why
- 01:03do we bother to have sleep and and I
- 01:05guess I can only imagine this because
- 01:07our you know we've created these these
- 01:09bodies of ours are so capable and
- 01:11they're so energetically and you know
- 01:13you know um consumptive and they make
- 01:15all these byproducts during the day that
- 01:17that at some point you just need a
- 01:19cleanup phase and that's that's one
- 01:20interpretation of sleep you just need to
- 01:22reset so the immune system is definitely
- 01:24resetting and and you know there's as I
- 01:26said there's evidence that a lot of the
- 01:27cells go kind quiescent into the tissues
- 01:29and they they may leave you alone for
- 01:31those reparative processes and actually
- 01:33allow those.
- 01:34You know, in terms of the data on there,
- 01:36there's there's a lot of studies that
- 01:38are being done and and I can't say that
- 01:40I've come to a a conclusion about that.
- 01:42This is this comes in the question of
- 01:44like is it known or do I do I not know
- 01:46it or is it does nobody know it? And I'd
- 01:49say this is might be one of these areas
- 01:50where about 10 factions of people know
- 01:52it but they don't agree,
- 01:54you know. So there's variations on
- 01:56things, but I think the data, for
- 01:57example, that immune cells dive into the
- 01:59bone marrow at night is is pretty solid.
- 02:01That makes sense.
- 02:02What they're doing and why that's
- 02:03important in the long sense of like what
- 02:05you're talking about everything from
- 02:06well, but I think it's, you know, things
- 02:08that happen overnight, you you're
- 02:10definitely your cognition improves. Is
- 02:12that immune or is that neuronal or both?
Lymphatic Clearance & Physical Appearance
- 02:14I think it's both.
- 02:15Something in the lymph plumbing immune
- 02:17system. One thing that's just striking
- 02:19like that is undeniable is probably the
- 02:22best way to put it is um everybody has
- 02:24bags under their eyes and looks like
- 02:25when they are sleepd deprived. They
- 02:27sleep for a night or two
- 02:29and it
- 02:30goes away. That's clearly accumulation
- 02:33of lymph. We we actually know that.
- 02:35That's just lymph fluid that's not being
- 02:36cleared. And it might not even be the
- 02:37brain's uh lymphatic clearance system.
- 02:40It's just there's a bunch of lymph
- 02:41pooling under your eyes. That's why you
- 02:43look like
- 02:44Yeah. And then you sleep for two nights
- 02:46well and you look better again. And the
- 02:49eyes get glassy. We know that the eyes
- 02:51get glassy when we're sleepd deprived.
- 02:53That's also a a lymphatic clearance
- 02:55issue. This is well established. Like so
- 02:57there's some things that are just like
- 02:58plumbing works better when we sleep and
- 03:00get up again. There's something
- 03:01literally about lying down and getting
- 03:02up. But that to me can't explain the the
- 03:06immune thing entirely because like the
- 03:10lymphatic system is like among other
- 03:12things, you know, immune surveillance.
- 03:15But
- 03:16I mean, one night lousy sleep and the
- 03:19person coughing across the room gets you
- 03:21sick
- 03:22often.
- 03:23But when you're well rested, you
- 03:24actually feel this robustness like n
- 03:27like okay, I might wash my hands or just
- 03:28kind of avoid them and you're good.
- 03:30Yeah. So it's it's I mean it's an
- 03:32incredible effect one way or the other.
Car Windshield Analogy
- 03:34Again I don't know the degree to which
- 03:36we can nail down you know which which
- 03:39part of things that are happening is
- 03:40which. I always like the story that that
- 03:42the um there's macrofasages immune cells
- 03:44in your eye that are basically clearing
- 03:46the clearing the lens. Mhm.
- 03:48You know, so there's there's all these
- 03:49like places where it's doing little
- 03:52clean up that you can imagine that if
- 03:54the the thing it's trying to get rid of
- 03:56is granularity that that you need to
- 03:58have sleep where you just aren't making
- 03:59more granularity so that it can you know
- 04:02sort of like when you wash your car
- 04:03windshield you do it completely at that
- 04:05point and but you can't be driving with
- 04:07flies hitting you right.
- 04:10That's a great analogy
- 04:11you know. So, I think there's certain
- 04:12elements of some of these cleanup
- 04:13processes that happen best when you're
- 04:15not getting things,
- 04:17you know, you know, dirty or again, I
- 04:19think a lot of what we're talking about
- 04:20is byproducts of our energetics that
- 04:22leave, you know, some damage behind it.
- 04:24And I I think we just use a lot of ATP
- 04:26and we do a lot of stuff as our bodies
- 04:28in and the sleep is time where you can
- 04:30not be, you know, producing more of that
- 04:32and get ahead of the curve on cleaning
- 04:34things up a bit. Um, like pulling into a
- 04:36gas station, cleaning off your
- 04:37windshield.
